When I have enough time, I like to fire off a few frames in the high key when I’m working a shoot. It doesn’t work all the time and like a lot of different styles it has it’s place, but when it works the way I want it to the results are often a lot of fun. And then you go purple.

elv000 – I shoot loads of BMX and Skate stuff, and have never really found any issues using 1/200th. As long as you bump uf the flash power, you will not get any motion blur. After asking around a lot of friends who shoot BMX aswell, i only found one of them who even understood what HSS was. I don’t think it is a popular as you think. Most Skate and Bike photographers just tend to up the power or just throw in more lights. Just my 2p :)

HSS wont help to freeze motion, as it “pulses” the flash to cover the whole sensor as the shutter travels across it.
Better to use more power at sync speed or less and use the flash to freeze the motion.

Thanks to all who provided informative reviews on this Pixel trigger.

As exciting as it sounds, it might very well worth waiting until other manufacturers come up with similar products. Pixel’s quality control/reliability issues and customer service are among some of my biggest concerns. I also think that the price is too high for a new product with such quality/reliability problem. When they first put it on Ebay the offering price was $138, and now almost $200. I also don’t particularly like the way they are selling it (by auctioning without Buy It Now option) – basically trying to reap as much profit as they could. If the initial price was $138 then the actual price is most likely around $90 (with some profit margin already). What is the justification of jacking up the price 100% (now almost $200) in less than a week?

Considering that Pixel’s facility is practically next door to Yongnuo (in Kowloon, Hong Kong), I won’t be surprised if Yongnuo will start selling similar product soon, perhaps even as early next year (overseas rumors). These Chinese companies have come a long way, and with more players/competitions in the market it will be more likely that they produce more reliable products with lower price.

I do need a lot of help with the title of my upcoming series though, “identity” is used in a completely different context in the art world and I want to avoid that context… suggestions?

Question :

I need another Flash for my studio, I have Vilensky 850 (it’s made in Israel). So now I’m looking for something good..And now I need to choose from 3 companies: Profoto Compact 600 Plus or Brincolor Minicom 80 or Elinchrom Style FX 400 (but there is now riper shop for Elinchrom in Israel, If something goes wrong I’ll be in need to send to Russia- Because i’ll buy it there).. Elinchrom is the cheapest for me but I’m afraid to stack with broken flash:(.. And another option is Profoto Acute with to head 3-4 year old with new Cables and new Flashtubes for only $800 but they are old and no warranty …
I very much want the Acute system,do you think is it safe to buy it?

Answer :

If you are in ISrael, istherea Profoto distributor there? I much prefer the Acute2 to the older Acute or Acute AlFA systems. Better controls and better built.
But i don’t have money for new Acute2 :( I was thinking of taking the no warranty old acute with 2 head and maybe adding to my kit a ringflash for portraits

I tell her all the time in italian “E’ Matto!” Your crazy.. cause she really is… And if you know I call her that she must be! Great person. Anyways someone asked me to show them what a ringlight looks like outside. It was shot with the Alien Bee Ring flash but half way through the shoot I switched back to my Profoto head.. Honestly the Alien Bee is a hunk of plastic poorly designed junk.. The ring is to small in size and you cant even focus the lens while its in the hole. The camera mount is junk and a pain. The reflector falls off constantly. I mean this thing is really really poorly designed and made. I got rid of it. I may be tied down to a power pack and having to use a power outlet for the Profoto but atleast I can see and focus and the camera stays put on the mount! I just make sure if I am working in a dark area to have some LED flash lights to use to see and focus.. I mean honestly for 300 bucks more for the profoto its so so much better than the Alien Bee plastic garbage. Also big tip guys you can have the Profoto Custom wired to your packs if you need to thus getting rid of the problem of having to have a profoto pack to run the head. You can have the Ringflash profoto head wired at a good Calument shop in a major city to run on your “Balcar” or “Novatron” “Norman” “Elinchrome” “Bronacolor” “Dynalight” packs. Saving you some bucks. YOu can do the same thing with those old “Tri Lights” That Norman used to make too…
